When I say 'free samples' what comes to your mind? I don't know about you, but all that comes to my mind is Costco - the heroes in their red aprons ready to serve you as many free samples of whichever food they are promoting for the day.. But for real, free samples are great right? Be it food, clothes, toiletry or those small teasers we get from companies in the mail - we'll use the sample but probably never buy the real product. |
But we'll like the company right? We tend to favor the company more, or subconsciously grow a liking of them because of the small 'treat' they chose to give us. (Free food as a treat by the way is amazing, I'm guilty to taking 2-3 samples verses the courteous 1..)
So, if we're on the same fandom page on loving free samples, I'd like to let you know of a free sample opportunity you'll regret missing out on - The President's choice Insider's Collection Pop Up Shop.

The Insider's Collection showcases more than 70 new products in four themed rooms (Dine, Mingle, Brunch and Gift Giving), and, from November 13 to December 19, the public can go there to sample PC’s new holiday treats.
As per the President's Choice website and mission statement of the Insider's Collection: "The PC Insider's Collection aims to expand the everyday consumer's perception of what meals can be prepared during the holidays and encourages the inclusion of exotic and cultural flavors into Canadian Christmas dinners."
Did they catch your attention with that? If not, how about some celebrities? The opening night party on Nov. 12 was hosted by David Chang, the celebrated American chef and founder of Momofuku restaurant group, and ET Canada will be shooting segments on location.
Alongside this, the PC website contextualizes products in editorial-style shoots that look like they could be from the pages of magazines. Many are shot drone-style – the favoured overhead vantage point of food bloggers – and come layered with recipes, decorating and entertaining tips that speak to the central place of food in culture.

Interestingly enough, I must applaud PC's tactic for this campaign - they know food speaks to everyone, and so does free, so why not combine the both and bring in the consumers? However, one must keep this in mind: You must register to view and be a part of the Insider's Collection. Yup, once must reserve tickets and only then will you be allowed inside to see the splendid foods (and eat them)
One can speculate the tactics PC is using with this particular campaign. By making their customer base formally register for their events, PC can monitor which event is attracting more attention and why (if the customer is food oriented, time oriented or theme oriented). The sampling events are also for a limited time, and the products are also sold based on demand, so PC will not be stocking its regular franchises with the goods it will be sampling out to the lucky few. By making these goods a "limited time" offer, PC is putting a drive into their customer base to buy now, which will navigate a profitable winter season for their sales.
As per PC's website, "Loblaw has partnered with Shaw Media on the holiday campaign, which kicked off with a half-hour ET Canada holiday special that aired on Global and, for the first time, Food Network Canada. Going forward, ET Canada will air special reports from the boutique, culminating in a “Year In Review” special in December that will feature ET hosts reviewing the year’s best entertainment moments while eating a PC Insiders Collection meal."
The samples are not like Costco though - they are a little bigger in size and make you understand the food you are tasting in its entirety verses tasting only half or few ingredients.
So, we can say they're getting the fame, their consumers and the popularity all at once eh? A campaign offering you free food, in exchange of a psychological agreement and liking of its company that will remain in the subconscious mind of the consumer.
Food lovers, or free sample lovers, you too will be consumed by the PC campaign, and perhaps become a PC fan - exactly what they expect of you. Let's say you voluntarily go to the event, and you try their free food samples. Well, your mind? It's now theirs, because you're the test dummy that succumbed to the free food, and made their campaign successful.
